To See Behind Walls
What would Walter Mitty's imagination look like today — in a world of post-9/11 terror, government surveillance, global warming, and political polarization? Benjamin Wood is a suburban father of two, loving husband, and dog owner in Middle America with a list of chores on a cold winter Saturday. Like Thurber's classic dreamer, his mind takes flight — into outer space, across Antarctic blizzards, through quarantine zones — before snapping back to the ordinary world waiting just outside the door. Inspired by James Thurber's 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,' this flash fiction collection is a meditation on modern manhood, imagination, and the small acts of control we carve out of a world that offers very little.
Critical Acclaim
“Erickson has the ability to instantly create scenes that crackle with intensity — and that skill works marvelously for flash fiction. This tale of courage, conviction and adventure will most likely thrill any reader who has the good fortune to come across it. To See Behind Walls is most highly recommended.”
“For those with a vivid imagination, the sky's the limit. Altogether, an inspiring flight of fancy.”
“It is a metaphor of postmodern manhood and fatherhood. It speaks to the adventurous souls of men who are trapped inside very ordinary, boring lives. The spirit of man craves danger, exploration, discovery, and adventure.”
“A five-star short story. It spoke to me. It left me wanting more. I would honestly like to see how each of Ben Wood's fantasy adventures played out. That is, I believe, the key to a great short story.”
